John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 – September 23, 1902) was a geologist, U.S. Soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions.

John Wesley Powell was born in 1834 in Mount Morris, New York, the son of Joseph Powell, a Methodist preacher who had emigrated from England 4 years earlier. A restless man, Joseph Powell gradually moved his family west across New York State and in 1838 settled in Jackson, Ohio.
